Synopsis:  Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical.  It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance.  Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek.  One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task – if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona's love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn't be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.

Directors: Julie Clemens

Vocal Director:  Wendy Berry           Choreographer:  Kelsey Newell

Everyone is welcome to audition and no experience is necessary. Auditions will be come and go, you do not need to stay the entire time. We will have an online sign up for time slots to help auditions go more smoothly and cut down on your wait time.  It is not required to sign up online, but it is strongly encouraged. Those who do sign up online will be given priority for that time slot.

Auditioning will take about 30 minutes and parents should stay while the children audition (please, no drop offs).  You will fill out an audition form (this can be Downloaded HERE if you wish to do it ahead of time). In the audition process, the children will learn a short dance with the choreographer (See Below), learn a song to sing together as a group with the music director (See Below), and then each child will be asked to tell the director their name, age and something interesting about themselves.  If a child seeks a lead role, they will need to list it on their audition form and click on the character from the below list for a cutting they will need to be prepared to read for director. They DO NOT need to memorize it, they can bring a printed copy with them to auditions.

If the child is unable to attend auditions, please call the office at 580-223-6387 so we can work with you.

Tuition fee per student is $50.00 (which includes a t-shirt and a DVD of performance) and $40 for each additional sibling, payable at the first rehearsal. Some scholarships will be available for those who qualify, please see our scholarship application form here.  We will also be offering a discount on tuition to those who pay before May 28th.  For those who pay early, its $10 off the first child and $5 off each additional child. Rehearsals will start May 28th and be from 1-3:00pm Monday through Thursday and 1-3:30pm on Friday.

Character List

In Order of Appearance:

Storytellers - Wonderful roles for performers with natural stage presence and big, clear voices. These characters are important for setting up the world and moving the story forward, so they need to be bold, energetic young actors. Gender: Both

Mama Ogre - Shrek's mother.  Sings a beautiful duet with Papa Ogre to young Shrek in the opening number “Big, Bright, Beautiful World.”

Papa Ogre - Shrek's father.  Sings a beautiful duet with Mama Ogre to young Shrek in the opening number “Big, Bright, Beautiful World.”

Little Ogre - Plays Young Shrek in “Big, Bright, Beautiful World”

Shrek - . Prides himself on being a big, green, terrifying ogre but we come to find out he has a huge heart. Shrek was kicked out at a young age to live alone until the fairytale creatures disturb him in his swamp. In an effort to regain his peace, he goes on a trip to save Princess Fiona. Shrek is a solid singer, and an excellent actor with comedic chops.

Captain of the Guards - Lord Farquaad's powerful, but comically cowardly, right-hand man. He has many hilarious lines and appears in “Here comes Lord Farquaad,” “What's Up Duloc,” “The Ballad of Farquaad” and “This Is Our Story.” Strong actor with great comic timing.

Guards - Featured guards who are part of Lord Farquaad's comedic crew.  They sing in “Here Comes Lord Farquaad,” “What's Up Duloc,” “The Ballad of Farquaad” and “This Is Our Story"

Pinocchio - A fairytale creature who is constantly annoyed that no one recognizes him as a real boy. He leads the troupe of Fairytale Creatures in the musical numbers “Story of My Life” and “Freak Flag.”

Big Bad Wolf - He doesn't need to be a scary, threatening big-bad-wolf type. At this point, he's a pretty tame wolf who is reduced to wearing Little Red Ridinghood's grandmother's dressing gown. This is a fun role for a newcomer to the stage. Gender: Both

The Three Little Pigs - Pig 1, Pig 2 And Pig 3. The classic three little pigs with a German twist. It isn't necessary that they look identical; looking for a fun and dynamic trio. Gender: Both

Wicked Witch - Fairytale creature with featured lines and solos in “That's the Story of my Life,” “Freak Flag” and “This Is Our Story.”

Peter Pan - Fairytale creature with lines and solos. In “That's the Story of My Life,” “Freak Flag” and “This Is Our Story.”

Mama Bear - Fairytale creature with featured lines and solos in “Freak Flag.” Also featured in “That's the Story of My Life” and “This Is Our Story.”

Papa Bear - Fairytale creature with featured lines and a solo in “That's the Story of my Life,” “Freak Flag” and “This Is Our Story.”

Baby Bear - Fairytale creature with lines and a big solo in “Freak Flag.”In “That's the Story of My Life,” and “This is Our Story.”

Donkey - A talking donkey on the run from Farquaad's guards. After being saved by Shrek, he sticks by Shrek's side and accompanies him on his trip to save Fiona from the far away castle.   Excellent singer and comedic actor with a huge personality.

Lord Farquaad - A very short man with gargantuan ambition! He is solely interested in gaining as much power as possible. This is a role for a good singer, but most importantly, your very best comedian who isn't afraid of making bold choices or looking silly.

Gingy - A great cameo role for a young performer who is as earnest as can be. Gingy is based on the Gingerbread Man who runs away like a fugitive from his baking captors. A performer with great energy.

Young Fiona - Princess Fiona as a little girl. Sings a solo in “I Know it's Today” with Teen Fiona and Fiona

Teen Fiona - Princess Fiona as a teenager.  Sings a solo in “I Know it's Today” with Young Fiona and Fiona.

Princess Fiona - Princess Fiona has a transforming spell over her that turns her into an ogre every night when the sun sets. This spell can only be broken with a true loves' kiss. Upon meeting Shrek, she finds that she has fallen in love with him.  A girl who can do it all: act, sing and dance. This is a premiere role for an experienced performer with a loveable spirit.

Puss in Boots - Non-speaking Fairy Tale character.

Knight 1 - Sings back-up to the Dragon in “Forever"

Knight 2 - Sings back-up to the Dragon in “Forever"

Knight 3 - Sings back-up to the Dragon in “Forever"
