Arsenic and Old Lace

By Joseph Kesselring

Directed by Nick Sweet

 Performances

September 20-23, 2007

It's hard to imagine homicide and insanity humorous, but Joseph Kesselring' play has endured the test of time and become one of America's best-loved black comedies. Originally entitled Bodies in Our Cellar, the play was first produced in 1941 and became a legendary hit with a Broadway run of 1,444 performances.

The story centers around to elderly sisters, Abby and Martha, who feel such pity toward their lonely gentlemen friends they do them a great service...they kill them!

There is also Teddy, the confused nephew, who digs in the cellar to conceal the victims of the Brewster sister's "kindness".  Teddy believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt, complete with his charge up San Juan Hill.

Mortimer, Teddy's brother, is a theatre critic and is engaged to Elaine, the minister's daughter.  Mortimer serves as a somewhat sane character amidst so much insanty.  He accidentally finds out about the curious hobby his aunts seem to have.

The third brother Jonathan who "wanted to become a surgeon like his grandfather, but he wouldn't go to medical school first and his practice got him into trouble.

More mishaps, murders, hidden bodies and poisoned wine appear.  Then the police force get into the act.
